The client requested the structural design and preparation of fabrication drawings of a bike rack which is now installed on Class 777 Merseyside Trains. This bike rack is design and manufactured out of glass reinforced sheet moulding compound (SMC) composite. A steel supporting frame and two aluminium bike hooks are also present. The design conforms with GRMT 2100 and designed for several loading/impact conditions.
Challenge: The design had to be specifically tailored to the original concept layout, weight, and manufacturability and installation limitations. Strict rail standards were also a major challenge on the structural performance of the bike rack without exceeding weight and geometry constrains.
