Corrosion is a major issue in offshore assets such as FPSOs (floating production systems), oil platforms and renewable infrastructure. The client request to investigate the existing structural integrity of a flare tower that was experiencing extensive corrosion, especially adjacent to the flare pipes. Repairing scheme would has resulted in the shutdown of the vessel costing millions of pound and composite repairing scheme would not be suitable due to high temperatures of the flare. Utilising advanced structural analysis, such as plastic finite element and fatigue analyses. It was concluded that the flare boom was safe to use for few more years before a major shutdown is scheduled.
