The objective of this project was to replace existing fragile concrete cable trough infrastructure with a combine GRP cable trough and walkway system to reduce rail personnel accidents and insurance claims. The system comprises of a GRP pultruded trough with an overlying GRP decking and a hand-rail system. The major challenge was to design a GRP pultruded section resistant to torsional actions, which needs to satisfy both serviceability and ultimate limit state. Minimizing the system weight per meter length was curial from an economic and sustainable point of view. This system was initially aimed by HS2 follow to the replacement of the entire cable trough infrastructure in the United Kingdom.
